If your child is involved in an investigation related to abuse or neglect, we understand this is a difficult and emotional time. Below is an overview of what to expect as the case moves forward.
Initial Review
After the responding officer completes the preliminary investigation, the case is reviewed by a supervisor. Together, they determine whether the case should be assigned to a detective for further investigation and whether it may proceed toward criminal prosecution.
Forensic Interview
If the case is assigned to a detective, your child may be scheduled for a forensic interview — a key step in gathering accurate and reliable information.
A forensic interview is:
- Conducted by a neutral, specially trained professional
- Designed to be non-leading, developmentally appropriate, and pressure-free
- Held in a safe, child-friendly setting to help your child feel comfortable
- Focused on obtaining information that may be used in legal proceedings
To protect your child and the integrity of the investigation, please avoid questioning your child about the incident or allowing others to do so before the interview.
Interviews are typically conducted at the CHKD Child Advocacy Center or by forensically trained detectives from our department.

What Happens Next
After interviews and evidence collection are complete, the case is submitted to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, who will decide whether to pursue criminal charges.
If your case is reassigned to a detective, they will contact you directly. Should charges be filed, you may receive a subpoena and be contacted by the Victim/Witness Office, which can:
- Help prepare you and your child for court.
- Provide ongoing support and guidance.
- Connect you with additional victim or witness services.
Staying Informed
- Contact the officer or detective assigned to your case.
- If you are unsure who that is, call the Detective Bureau at 757-385-4101 (please have your report number ready).
- For after-hours assistance, call the non-emergency line at 757-385-5000 to speak with an on-duty detective.
Safety Concerns
If you or your child ever feel threatened or at risk of further harm, call 911 immediately. An officer will respond to assist and help you create a safety plan.
We are committed to supporting you through every step of this process. Your safety and your child’s well-being are our top priorities.
