Application Process
The first step on your journey to joining the Virginia Beach Police Department is to complete an online application through the City's Department of Human Resources.
Applying to be a Virginia Beach Police Officer Recruit is a multi-step process.
- Complete an online application and credit authorization release
- Written exam
- Personal history questionnaire (PHQ) and polygraph
- Background investigation and pre-screening board
- Oral interview and physical ability test (PAT)
- Conditional offer of employment
- Medical and psychological exam (City paid)
Many out-of-town applicants ask how many visits to Virginia Beach will be required before the academy start date. Here is a quick explanation of how the process is structured to accommodate out-of-town applicants:
- Visit 1: Written test
- Visit 2: Polygraph exam and interview with the background investigator
- Visit 3: Oral interview and physical agility testing (Friday) and, if successful, psychological exam on Saturday and medical exam on Monday (when possible)
