VBPD is committed to supporting the department’s retirees through mental health support, engagement events and more.
The outpouring of support from our community following the tragic loss of two of our police officers has been overwhelming, and you may be wondering how you can help. More information can be found on our support page for Officer Girvin and Officer Reese.

Professional and sworn staff that retire from VBPD are invited to sign up for specialized retiree communications by adding themselves to the VBPD retiree directory. Communications with retirees are handled by the Public Affairs Office.
VBPD offers four dates each year for retirees to qualify for the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) nationwide carry.
The remaining dates in 2024 for LEOSA qualifications are July 15 and Oct. 15. Contact Master Police Officer Shawn Johnson for information on attending these dates.
Ammunition is provided — retired officers must bring their firearm and holster. VBPD will facilitate processing the documentation for retired officers.
