A Continuing Service

If you're transitioning out of the military and interested in continuing a career of public service, consider position in law enforcement. You're likely considering opportunities provided by a particular agency, the quality and features of the surrounding community and starting pay as important factors. Those who are still serving in the reserves are entitled to 120 hours/year of military leave to utilize for military related duty.

About a third of our sworn officers have served in the military or are currently serving as reservists. Because of the paramilitary nature of police work, many veterans have found the transition into a career as a police officer to be easier than a transition into other professions.

Per Virginia Beach city code, sworn police officers do face a mandatory retirement age at 65 years of age. But, unlike many other law enforcement agencies our department does not have an age “cut-off” for applicants. This allows those who have served in the military for 20 or even 30 years to explore a second career within our department.
